How to Compare Money Transfer Services Before You Send

There are currently over a dozen massive FinTech companies begging for your business: Wise, Remitly, WorldRemit, OFX, Xoom, and Revolut, just to name a few. They all claim to be the cheapest and the fastest.

With so much marketing noise, how do you actually know which one is giving you the best deal on your international transfer?

The secret is to ignore their marketing entirely. Ignore the stated "fees." Ignore the promotional banners. You only need to look at three specific data points to find the true winner.

The 3-Step Comparison Framework

Step 1: Check the True Mid-Market Rate

Before you even open a money transfer app, you need to know the true wholesale price of the currency. Go to Google or CurrencyExc and look up the live mid-market rate. Write this number down. This is your benchmark for fairness.

Step 2: Compare the "Total Delivered Amount"

This is the only metric that actually matters. Open two or three different provider apps and type in the exact amount you want to send (e.g., $1,000).

Look at the bottom of the screen. How many Euros, Pounds, or Rupees is the recipient actually going to receive in their bank account? Whichever app shows the highest number at the bottom of the screen is the cheapest service. Period.

Why does this work?

The "Total Delivered Amount" cuts through the BS. It forces the provider to factor in both their upfront fee and their hidden exchange rate markup into one final, undeniable number.

Step 3: Check the Delivery Speed

Not all transfers are created equal. Provider A might deliver €905, but it takes 3 business days. Provider B might deliver €903, but it arrives in 10 seconds. You have to decide if that €2 difference is worth waiting three days.

Always check if the provider is using a local payout network (like ACH in the US, SEPA in Europe, or FPS in the UK). If they are, the transfer will usually be nearly instant. If they are routing via SWIFT, expect it to take days.

A Warning About "Promotional" Rates

Many providers (like Remitly or WorldRemit) use a "Loss Leader" strategy. They will give you an incredibly good exchange rate—sometimes even better than the mid-market rate—on your very first transfer, just to acquire you as a customer.

However, on your second and third transfers, they quietly switch you to their standard, heavily marked-up rate. Do not get complacent. Just because a provider was the cheapest last month does not mean they are the cheapest today. Always run the 3-step check before pressing send on a large amount.
